A Historic Community Pillar
For over twelve decades, our building has stood at the crossroads of Greenview, evolving alongside the needs of the Scott Valley community.
Constructed in 1900 by Lauren Baldwin, the building originally served as a bustling General Store. It was a primary hub for homesteaders, miners, and farmers in the region to buy supplies, trade goods, and share local news.
In 1935, as the valley changed, the building was gifted to the local American Legion post. For the next fifty years, it echoed with the camaraderie of local veterans, hosting service events, dinners, and civic celebrations.
In 1985, the American Legion transferred ownership to the newly incorporated 501(c)(3) nonprofit, The Valley Oaks, Inc. (commonly referred to as Valley Oaks Seniors). Under this new charter, the facility was dedicated to supporting the social, nutritional, and health needs of local senior citizens.
Today, while keeping our commitment to seniors, Valley Oaks has expanded its role to serve as a broad community center for all residents of Greenview, Fort Jones, Etna, and Quartz Valley.

The General Store Era
Built by Lauren Baldwin, the facility opens as a local General Store, supplying settlers and families throughout Scott Valley.
The American Legion
The building is gifted to the American Legion, serving as a vital meeting hall, social hub, and support center for veterans.
Informal Seniors Group
Seniors in Scott Valley form an informal group, identifying a pressing need for dedicated localized services, hot meals, and social activities.
Nonprofit Incorporation
The organization officially incorporates as "The Valley Oaks, Inc." and receives the building deed from the American Legion, establishing the Senior Center.
Reinstatement & Expansion
Following a structural reorganization, our 501(c)(3) status is fully reinstated. We broaden our scope to serve the entire community while expanding preservation efforts.
Today & The Future
Actively restoring the historic building, hosting vital nutritional services, and expanding weekly programs for all generations in Scott Valley.

We are committed to providing helpful resources, nutrition assistance, and utility services to improve local quality of life.
USDA Commodities & Emergency Food Program
Through our partnership with **Great Northern Services**, Valley Oaks serves as the official monthly distribution site for USDA Commodity foods and emergency nutritional assistance in Greenview and Scott Valley.
Distribution Schedule:
- USDA Commodities: First Wednesday of every month from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
- Emergency Food Programs: Available periodically. Contact program managers directly for emergency boxes.
Note: Pre-qualification is based on household size and income guidelines set by Siskiyou County. If you need assistance qualifying, volunteers are available during distribution hours to help you register.
Official Voting Precinct & Polling Place
Valley Oaks is designated by Siskiyou County as an official polling precinct location. We help make the democratic process accessible to residents living in Greenview, Quartz Valley, and surrounding rural boundaries.
Voting Services & Information:
- Election Day Polling: Open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM during official local, state, and federal elections.
- Ballot Drop-Off: A secure, official ballot collection box is typically placed on-site during active election cycles.
- Accessibility: Our historic building features wheelchair-accessible ramps and dedicated voting booths designed for disabled access.
Community Wi-Fi Hotspot
Internet access can be limited in rural areas. In coordination with **Siskiyou Telephone**, Valley Oaks is proud to be a designated Free Public Wi-Fi Hotspot, offering residents and visitors a place to connect to high-speed broadband.

- Location: Coverage extends inside the main building, across the front porch, and out into the parking area.

Main Hall
A spacious wood-paneled room with high ceilings, historical detailing, and seating. Perfect for dinners, receptions, workshops, or family reunions.
Fully Equipped Kitchen
Includes commercial prep counters, stoves, ovens, refrigerators, and serving windows directly linking to the Main Hall. Must be rented in conjunction with another room for meal prep.
Private Meeting Room
A smaller, carpeted room suited for small business meetings, committee workshops, or support groups.

A donation of $50.00 helps purchase supplies for community bingo and pays for building heating during a winter social hour.
